Basse-Normandie: a combination of beautiful landscapes and high-tech developments
Basse-Normandie is both a countryside and coastal region full of history and tradition, with an open and welcoming culture and an outstanding quality of life.
These assets have enabled it to attract high-tech industries in various sectors for many decades, and its strengths are continually being demonstrated in active and innovative research, enabling the region to gain visibility on a European and worldwide scale in four major areas:
- Agro - Bio-Industries
- Environmental Management - Environmental control technology
- Materials - Plastification
- Information and communication technologies and imaging - Secure electronic transactions (TES)
Basse-Normandie has also created cross-regional synergies with the aim of developing know-how, sharing information and increasing industrial and university level cooperation. It's thanks to this pioneering spirit that several regional and cross-regional projects are working towards the creation of centres of competitiveness, in particular in relation to the following topics:
- "Norm And Deal" Secure Electronic Transactions
- The Plastification Centre in Alençon
- The Arc Manche Centre for environmental management and the security of industrial processes
- Competitiveness in the equine sector
- "Normandy Motor Valley" Power and Propulsion Centre
Basse Normandie provides an excellent strategic geographic location for accessing numerous markets:
- A maritime coastline of 470 km along the English channel, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with access to international traffic
- Close proximity to major European capitals (Paris, London, Brussels),
- A key position between the Paris Region and the West of France,
- Close proximity to very large markets: 90 million consumers within a radius of 500 km.
The diversity and depth of its education system enables 26,000 students to be educated at the University of Caen every year, as well as 11,000 at other higher education establishments, providing a real breeding ground for the skills and dynamism (one in three of the population is less than 20 years old) needed for research and innovation.
