This report is presented by the Management Committee of COST 30 bis to the signatories of the Memorandum of Understanding on completion of three years' work with a view to providing recommendations. It briefly describes the international cooperation in the first phase of COST 30, sets out the favourable conclusions and the convincing results of a public demonstration of an existing motorway control system carried out at a site in the Netherlands, and describes continuing research on the following:
- use of microelectronics for road/vehicle communication;
- use of the Citizens' Band in the countries of Europe;
- automatic incident detection;
- regional radio broadcasting of traffic information;
- detection of weather conditions;
- variable message signs.
