Innovation management tools a review of selected methodologies

A report entitled "Innovation management tools: a review of selected methodologies" has been published by the European Innovation Monitoring System (EIMS).

The report is the result of a study, commissioned by EIMS, on the tools and methodologies used by consultants and advisors working with small and medium-sized enterprises to assist them in managing innovation. The main focus was on innovation management tools (IMTs) used within the framework of the MINT (Managing the Introduction of New Technologies) action line of the former SPRINT programme, together with some methodologies of a similar type.

A selection of such tools (17) was classified, the strengths and limitations of the tools assessed, principles of good practice in their use identified, and general conclusions drawn. The study also sought to set the use of these tools in the wider context of support for innovation in firms.

The report and case studies produced as a result of the study should be of interest to consultants, business advisors, consultancy and business support organizations, managers in economic and development agencies, those concerned with the design and implementation of innovation support programmes, and SME managers themselves.

A summary of the IMT report is presently available on the WWW at:

Promotion of Innovation Management Techniques

The promotion of Innovation Management Techniques (IMTs) is aimed at supporting efforts of national and regional organisations, both in the public and private sectors, promoting structured innovation management techniques in SMEs. It builds on previous.

Community projects, e.g. MINT (Managing the Integration of New Technology) of the former SPRINT programme.

Directory of IMT projects

A proper integration of Innovation Management Techniques (hereinafter IMTs) facilitates an entreprise's ability to establish and integrate new technology in a coherent and non-disruptive manner, thus strengthening businesses - and particularly SMEs - long term business prospects.

As most SMEs do not have the necessary in home knowledge and skills in IMTs, they often rely on external advisory services (e.g. consultancy companies, specialised promotion bodies, etc.) to use and incorporate these IMTs within their business.

In the framework of the EC's INNOVATION PROGRAMME a series of projects promoting IMTs are supported. The objectives are:

  • Developing experience and raising awareness in the design and monitoring of support schemes promoting IMTs;
  • Creating a body of experience by the implementation of more than 900 innovation consultancy assignments in SMEs
  • Disseminating results to facilitate the harmonisation of methodologies and provide added value to regional and national schemes and their operations, public or private. Innovation Management Techniques
