Projects by clusters Operational Forecasting (OF) Cluster The cluster comprises 16 current FP5 projects. Their total EU contribution is over 30 M€. Objectives This cluster was created by the Commission in 1998 during the MAST-III Programme and was later extended to include operational forecasting projects from the 5th Framework Programme. The aim of the Operational Forecasting (OF) Cluster is to further the development of the operational forecasting methods, tools and systems required in Europe. As a consequence, an intensive exchange of information and increased co-ordination and co-operation is foreseen between the projects participating in the OF Cluster. Structure of the OF Cluster The OF Cluster was originally formed from seven MAST-III projects. These projects were: MFSPP (Mediterranean Forecasting System Pilot Project); DIADEM (Development of Advanced Data Assimilation Systems for Operational Monitoring and Forecasting of The North Atlantic and Nordic Seas); EuroROSE (European Radar Ocean Sensing), SEANET-DI (SeaNet Data Interface); CLIMEROD (Influence of Climate Change on Coastal Sediment Erosion); PIONEER (Preparation and Integration of Analysis Tools Towards Operational Forecast of Nutrients in Estuaries of European Rivers); ESODAE Phase 1 (Planning for a North West European Shelf Seas Ocean Data Assimilation and Forecast Experiment). For MAST-III, the total EU contribution was 11.1 M€. The total number of MAST-III partners participating in the OF Cluster numbered 74. The MAST-III projects have either finished, or are at the stage of producing their final reports. The OF Cluster currently comprises 19 ESD FP5 projects that are all formally linked together via a common attachment to the Description of Work of each project. Of these, 16 are funded within the topics of the Key Action 3 'Sustainable marine ecosystems', 2 are administrated under this key action but are funded as a result of a GMES call and another one is funded under the Key Action 2 'Global change'. The projects are listed in the table at the end.
