Integration of Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Generation in Energy Supply Systems

Date: 25.09.2001 - 26.09.2001

Place: Brussels, Belgium

Description: Renewable energy sources and distributed generation (for heating/cooling and electricity) have a crucial role to play in supporting the European Union's key policy objectives of combating the greenhouse effect and reducing atmospheric pollution and improving the security of Europe's energy supply.

To bring about a substantial medium to long-term penetration of distributed energy resources in Europe, it is necessary to address the key issues related to their integration into existing energy networks and to prepare the ground for the future infrastructures for energy generation and distribution.

The main objectives for the conference are as follows:

  • to review the results of past and current research - on a national/ European / international basis - and identify the best practices, success stories and accumulated know-how for the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Distributed Generation (DG).

  • to examine the key issues and features - both technical and non-technical - for RES and DG technologies in order to evaluate their potential in the medium to long-term.

  • to identify research opportunities in the spirit of the European Research Area (ERA) and energy-related EU policies and to discuss the means of implementation (networks of excellence, integrated projects, collaboration between Member States, international aspects).

Conference proceedings: Bringing together over 350 participants representing all of the main European stakeholders involved in renewable energy sources and distributed generation, the conference not only underlined the strategic importance of distributed energy resources to Europe's future energy supply, but also raised the awareness of the research community to the policy perspectives and needs of industry.

The conference presentations and discussions pointed the way to the further development of the European dimension of RTD activities in this field, within the concept of the European Research Area.
