Prospects for Fuel Cells in a European Research Area

Date: 29-30.05.2000

Place: Tervuren - Brussels, Belgium

Description: There has recently been a strong increase in the interest in fuel cell research, as fuel cells are expected to play a major role in any future sustainable energy supply and may, in the long term, replace a large part of the current combustion systems in all end use sectors.

Fuel cells can make major contributions toward achieving key EU objectives aimed at energy savings, a reduction of CO2 emissions and other pollutants, the diversification of energy supply, and an overall sustainable development.

The conference aims at promoting on this field a true European Area of Research and Innovation as requested by the Lisbon European Council of 23 and 24 March 2000. The conference aims at:

  • mapping out fuel cell research activities in EU member states in order to foster the dissemination of results and excellence throughout the EU;

  • promoting closer collaboration between national and European fuel cell research by setting up networks on a number of important topics in the area of fuel cell RTD;

  • serving as a meeting place for persons from a wide range of organisations related to fuel cell research in order to prepare collaborative projects for future European Commission calls for proposals on this and other Energy related topics.

Particular attention will be drawn to aspects related to the comparison and benchmarking of research results obtained at a national level, and the exploitation of results through R&D partnerships between researchers and interested industrialists and investors.

The conference also aims at exploring and clarifying the possibilities of collaboration with the US on fuel cell research. This possibility now exists due to the framework agreement on EU-US RTD co-operation signed in December 1997, and an Implementing Arrangement, between the EC and the US Department of Energy for co-operation in the field of energy RTD which is currently being prepared.
