Rapid Implementation of Product Data Management

The management of product data is a limiting factor in the competitive performance of manufacturing industry in Europe. This can be explained by the fact that products become increasingly customer specific so that product and process specifications have to flow synchronously with the customer order. Only companies that have information systems that can manage and support this flow can maintain their responsiveness to customer needs. Product Data Management (PDM) systems offer such a solution which however is typically complex and resource intensive in implementation, putting PDM outside of the scope of many SMEs. This project reduces the time, cost, risk and effort required to implement PDM successfully. The project will do so by developing innovative methods and tools that make implementation of PDM systems faster, easier and more effective.

The primary objective of the RapidPDM project is to develop a generic PDM implementation methodology that is supported with a set of IT-tools. This will address the needs of industry by supporting the implementation process for product data management. The objectives of this project are to,

The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce the cost, time, risk and effort of product data management implementation, and to make the benefits available to European enterprises, particularly SMEs. These methods and tools are innovative because they are not available at present and because existing methods for implementing e.g. ERP-systems do not work for PDM systems.
