Research issues posed by the next generation of advanced information technology for the media industry (in its broadest sense) require the integration of previously distinct disciplines, and the replacement of ‘technology push’ by ‘creative pull’. Multiple-media research will need to integrate advanced technologies with media types and new modes of creation via advanced IT; and relate technological and applications research to content issues in a theoretical understanding of vision, sound and movement.
The global objective is to gain a fuller understanding of the relationships between content, medium and technology in user contexts ranging from data creators to data users, from entertainment through education to fundamental research.
Specific objectives are
Approaches and methodologies
The Working Group brings together experts from science and technology, media production and media theory for two Development Workshops each year that will address specific sub-sectors and research topics. The Development Workshops are interleaved with one small discussion meeting per year (to review results and prepare the next Development Workshop ) and Industry visits to integrate findings with industrial practice. The programme concludes with an international Conference.
Exploitation of results and industry impact
Deliverable outcomes are expected to include the publication of Workshop reports and papers (in electronic and printed form); the establishment of a scholarly journal with a major publisher; inputs to standards organisations; proposals for further specific research; and collaborations between members and the media industry on exemplary experimental productions. CIRCUS will also collaborate with I3Net on the dissemination of results.
