This session on the third day of EITC 97 will provide an introduction to the Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme, one of the major components of the Commission's proposal for the Fifth Framework Programme (1998-2002).

The IST Programme brings together and extends the ACTS, Esprit and Telematics Applications programmes to provide a single and integrated programme that reflects the convergence of information processing, communications and media, and responds to the need to integrate R&D with take-up actions.

• This working document is excerpted from the Commission’s working paper COM (97) 553, adopted on 5 November, which provided more details on the contents of the Commission's proposal for the Fifth Framework Programme, COM(97) 142, adopted on 9 April. The Framework proposal included an outline of the IST Programme.
