Helping European SMEs become more successful online

Increasing the awareness of the business potential in teleworking, teletrading and telecooperation across Europe will help smaller European SMEs become more competitive in online business.

The Internet has become a fundamental business resource for industry and commerce. Yet many European SMEs lack the experience to exploit its information access and dissemination facilities to the full. One ACTS project plans to help smaller European enterprises become more successful online in the competitive Internet environment.

The ETD (European Telework Development) project is responsible for increasing awareness of the applications and content of the European Telework Online (ETO) network of web sites, and improving the takeup of teleworking, teletrading and telecooperation methods within Europe and between Europe and other parts of the world. Work is focusing on areas such as:

The ETO's online presence has come from a standing start to attract an audience of some 8 000 regular users, with numbers increasing at a rate of 30-40% per month. It is operating within a business-to-business context, with no pre-existing offline enterprise as a base and a minimal promotional spend.

A network of linked websites has been established in languages other than English and with locally customised content, thereby extending the reach and accessibility of the online presence to a much larger global audience. And commercial activity has already begun, with the online promotion and ordering of items relevant to the target audiences.

The stand at EITC is demonstrating the online methods developed within the project, and their use to develop and sustain a virtual enterprise. The intention is to show how these techniques can attract and engage an international target audience at low cost and with a high level of user satisfaction.
