EUROMEDIA

Multimedia archiving system for professional content providers

A multimedia archiving system for broadcasters and other professional content providers offers easy content storage and access for mixed text, image, video and audio materials.

Broadcasting organisations and other professional media content providers need to handle a wide variety of text, video and audio materials. More than that, these materials need to be easily stored, accessible and searchable for content, all in a competitive environment where time is money.

Researchers in the EUROMEDIA project have developed a distributed multimedia storage system for such tasks. Project participants include five major European broadcasters, the BBC, ORF, SDR, SVT and SWF. These organisations together with several consulting companies have developed an innovative archive solution for storage of and access to media content.

Platform-independent and fully-scaleable in size, the system supports video digitisation, preview of material, automated video analysis with 'shot detection' and key frame extraction, documentation and retrieval. Web-based graphical user interfaces provide easy access to material, including information stored in existing systems. The system also supports wide-area network access to media archives.

Target users for the system, as well as the broadcasters, are all organisations that need to store and access a mix of textual and audio-visual materials, i.e. AV production firms, footage distributors, large companies and local authorities. In fact any organisation that can benefit from integrated handling of text, images, audio and video content.

The stand at EITC is demonstrating digitisation, storage, automatic analysis, documentation, provision and retrieval of digital materials using the Web-based graphical user interface. A full-motion video also shows these capabilities in action.
