HPCN-TTN: HPFIT

Using 3-D positioning data to guide robot systems

A handheld 3-D measurement system offers precise measurements of points or surfaces, providing accurate positioning data for automated management and control systems.

Accurate measurement and positioning is an essential aspect of all automated manufacturing and production processes. Here HPCN techniques can be used by smaller organisations to gain the low-cost but powerful processing facilities needed to integrate such measurements into real-time management and control systems.

The HPFIT project has developed a hand-held 3-D measurement system with an active optical probe, for precise measurements within such automated processes. Called Messtaster, the system enables any kind of surface or point to be measured simply by touching it with the probe tip. A key objective for the project is to integrate positioning data gained from such measuring systems as well as cameras into a closed loop control system, using high-performance data processing to provide the real-time system management.

Visitors to the stand at EITC 97 can see the Messtaster system being demonstrated.
