If electronic technologies are to provide more than a superficial level of support for culture and the arts, then basic Web sites on the Internet are clearly insufficient. They may well act as electronic brochures, but something more is required if the purpose is truly to improve public awareness and the commercial performance of cultural institutions.
This thinking lies at the core of the M.CUBE project. The intention of the project is to reach beyond the standard facilities provided by the Web and bring a more forceful presence to cultural multimedia, becoming a strong partner or 'virtual companion' of authors, producers, cultural managers, public institutions and private companies.
The project is charged with creating a multimedia support network, based on four Mediterranean regions (Spain, France, Italy and Greece), dedicated to fostering the development of European multimedia applications in the field of culture and the arts. This must create a critical mass to penetrate the consumer market at international level and to exploit the enormous European potential in terms of cultural content.
Four multimedia support centres (one in each country) are creating national Web sites, each composed of three sections. An open-access area provides public information, whilst a special area for M.CUBE subscribers gives access to reports, research studies and news from the cultural multimedia world. In addition, a private area restricted to M.CUBE project partners contains fully updated information about the project. All of this is on demonstration for EITC 97 visitors.
