MURMUR

CBT techniques lay the foundations for just-in-time training

Computer-Based Training enables companies to train employees in-house and to utilise just-in-time training, allowing staff to be equipped with new skills as and when necessary.

Busy companies are increasingly turning to Computer-Based Training (CBT) for their staff. CBT is a useful business training tool that makes it unnecessary to spend two or three days away from the office to follow a traditional classroom course.

MURMUR, a consortium of trainers, consultants, software developers and multimedia experts, believes the time is right for computer-based training, since it allows companies under time pressure to consider just-in-time training. The participants aim to produce a prototype multimedia CBT package, based on a proven, existing set of training material. They are focusing on the Software Process Improvement field, an area currently lacking CD-ROM or on-line training material.

The technologies used in the project include CD disk production, software tools to manage communications and providing documentation via the Internet. A prototype of one module, to be placed on a CD-ROM entitled 'Gathering and Managing User Requirements', has already been produced. The new CD-ROM offers a mix of interesting and informative material, taking the human factor element of classroom learning into account.

Plans are afoot to commercialise the CD-ROM with a view to launching spin-offs targeted at software engineers, especially in the area of key process improvements. Although CD-ROMs are now considered the most convenient format, the partners also hope to produce a downloadable version of the course for users who have access to a 'faster' Internet. On-line support may also be added, possibly spinning out into user groups for people who have followed the course.

EITC exhibition delegates are invited to explore on a PC the prototype module in this software process improvement course. A second PC, linked to a projector, plays a demonstration CD for viewing by a larger audience.
