TEN-34

High-speed backbone network for European R&D

High-speed network provides ATM backbone links to national research networks across Europe and facilitates research and development collaboration.

Researchers in 18 European countries - including the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia - now have their own high-speed network. Operating at 34 Mbps, this new international service increases R&D competitiveness by facilitating collaboration on everything from technical testing and technology transfer to telecommunications.

TEN-34 is a joint networking initiative of Esprit and the Telematics Applications Programme. It provides complementary international capacity so that national research network investments can be exploited on a global basis. Now undergoing a phased implementation, the initiative addresses requirements for greater capacity while also supporting emerging multimedia applications. Based on standard Internet-style services, it uses new ATM virtual paths provided by European public telecom operators, with expansion to other countries planned as paths become available. In view of the immaturity of ATM technology, an experimental ATM test bed is being used to validate new developments and features in advance of their introduction.

Activities are now focusing on increasing capacity and providing more advanced services. For example researchers want to improve transmission quality; important for emerging applications such as multimedia video images since standard Internet-style services do not guarantee the required service quality. Participants are confident that the network's success will ensure continuity beyond the lifetime of this project, thus providing a continuing support service for Europe's R&D community.

At EITC 97 a connection to TEN-34 demonstrates the day-to-day use of the network, including multimedia communication sessions with remote sites - among them National Research Networks - across Europe. Another display shows the layout of the network, how data travels over it and how countries are connected. The presentation also features information on experiments with advanced ATM backbone services in a pan-European context.
