European industry depends increasingly on quality software-based systems to maintain its competitiveness. However, enterprises often encounter difficulties in finding out about best practice in software development. This problem launched the VASIE-1 project, which developed the basis of an electronic repository of final reports on the results of ESSI (European Software Systems Initiative), a major programme under Esprit.
Like its predecessor, VASIE-2 provides software development best-practice information, accessible through the Internet using existing Web technologies. The project's overall goal is to broaden this best practice library and develop a method of permanent dissemination. Further aims include the processing of ESSI results for publication, the implementation of best practice discussion forums, and the development of a theme-centred analysis of the repository.
Project participants have already worked out how to enhance the repository's search facilities, allowing companies to find information by searching on data such as project acronyms or reference numbers. Although currently providing information only on the ESSI initiative, this project will eventually form the kernel of a Europe-wide software best practice repository.
The stand includes a preliminary demonstration of the final repository as it will be available on the Internet. Visitors can obtain additional information on the improvement experiments performed in Europe, the results achieved and any lessons learnt.
