NEWS RELEASE
Two-dimensional optical interconnections using arrays of polymer optical fibres
(updated 28 February 1997)
The University of Dortmund, a partner in
the OIIC project has demonstrated two-dimensional optical interconnections realised by using arrays of polymer optical fibres (POF) aligned by precision hole-arrays. The POF's have an outer diameter of 125 microns, which makes them very flexible, a core diameter of about 120 microns and a numerical aperture of 0.5.
Total insertion loss of a 20 cm long 2x4 interconnection including two 90 degree-bends was measured to be 2 dB +/-0.2 at 633 nm.
