RADOM (25748)

RADOM is a demonstration project which aims towards the launching of a low-cost modular development environment for open microprocessor based systems. Within this context Synergy wants to pave the path for commercialisation of such a product within the SME user community. The project is driven by two factors:

Firstly, by the proposer's own need for such a development environment identified in various designs and recently in a current design task, that of the implementation of voice and data encryption engines: Processor-FPGA schemes that will be installed in systems that require ciphering of data or voice.
Secondly, by the need of other SMEs for such a modular development platform, aiming to have a low-cost in-house rapid-prototyping and test unit. This holds true for all SMEs that are involved with the design of electronic systems, and that observation has been confirmed by the results of a requirements survey conducted by Synergy Systems on behalf of the local node in the framework of the OMI User Support Network (USN) DOMINIC project.

Based on these observations as well as on the drawn experiences, and on the encryption engine currently under design, Synergy aims at the development of an architecture based on interconnected prototyping HW and SW modules, which will become a "starter's-kit" of open microprocessor-based technology. This architecture is called RADOM (Rapid Development of Open Microprocessor-base systems). Through this project, Synergy aims to:

Implement the RADOM prototyping system by using, where possible, "best practice" technological (EOS RTOS, PI bus etc.), methodology elements from OMI. The RADOM architecture will be based on a scheme of interconnected modules. The basic configuration of RADOM will comprise two such modules: one with FPGAs for the implementation of custom hardware and one with a powerful microprocessor (equipped with the EOS RTOS) for the execution of the application software.
Demonstrate the platform's validity on two (voice and data) Encryption Engine applications. The design of the encryption engines themselves are undertaken outside the scope of this project. The incremental effort needed to adapt and evaluate/demonstrate it on the RADOM platform will be part of the project.

A strong dissemination activity will be undertaken for demonstrating OMI technology and benefiting (through the project results and experiences) SMEs Europe wide. This is drawn both from the fact that this is an obligation within this demonstration action framework but also is driven by the commercial interest of the proposer itself. There is already an agreement with the OMI/DOMINIC USN and Synergy will seek towards the establishment of similar agreements with other USNs (e.g. PROMINENT, EUROMIC, IUN etc.) as well. Within this context two starter kits (beta-versions) will be given freely to each USN in order to give them the chance to test its validity as well as to give a significant boost towards this dissemination task through their own channels and their strong links with SMEs.
