AVITRACO identified a gap in the market for a cost-effective pilot training device which would enhance ground school training. With the help of its European partners brought together under Esprit, a product is being developed that promises to capture a significant part of that market and lead the way in future low cost aviation training technology.
AVITRACO A/S is a small Danish company, specialising in the development of air pilot training and simulation products. It supplies a range of European and other international air industries, including airlines, aircraft simulator producers, pilot training schools, and air traffic control organisations, etc. The latest product, the Multi Aircraft Training Environment (MATE), promises to be a significant breakthrough in pilot training technology, offering a real alternative to current ground school training equipment that is both low cost, and provides an optimal reproduction of a real aircraft environment.
Using advanced software and man-machine interface technology, the MATE system is being designed to incorporate the following key features:-
The main potential benefits to a user of MATE are that it provides effective training in all necessary pilot procedures in an environment that is truly representative of real aircraft. In addition, the MATE system will be cheap to purchase, to upgrade and to adapt to new training requirements. It will also be easy to use both under instructor supervision in formal training programmes, and by pilots working alone to practise and refresh their skills.
The first MATE systems will be aimed at small commuter airlines - operating SAAB 340, SAAB 2000, Dornier 328, and similar aircraft - who currently possess little training equipment of their own and who therefore need to purchase training from training schools. These airlines may achieve significant enhancement of pilot proficiency prior to moving on to flight training by purchasing a MATE system. Once successfully launched, MATE will be targeted on the wider pilot training market as a cost-effective device for procedures training.
In order to help launch the product successfully, the MATE consortium has set up a Users Forum, designed to give industry representatives an early insight into the concept, design and realisation of MATE; to clarify the industry's general requirements for simulators and training and to identify specific requirements; and to show to the airlines and regulatory authorities that the MATE - and optimised fidelity - has no negative implications for safety.
