The work of the esprit programme is directed at the basic, underpinning information technologies of the Information Society, and at selected topics which integrate technologies into systems. Activities in the latter areas are organised as focused clusters. In addition, long term research is supported where effort at a European level has the potential to lead to future breakthroughs. The technical areas supported include:
