Roll on, roll off, roll over

The safety of passenger ships, particularly ro-ro ferries, should benefit from a package of measures proposed by the European Commission. Stability standards developed by eight northern member states are to apply across the EU. The Commission has also made it clear that international or EU legislation is needed on the liability of carriers.

Nice clean competition
European industry is now required to use the best available techniques (BAT) for reducing pollution in order to get operating permits. A study of the cement, paper and metallurgy sectors finds that clean technology can boost profits in large plants, but be costly for small ones.
