The dangers of over-reacting
Manufacturing chemicals on an industrial scale is a dangerous business. Safety standards are high, but sometimes a freak incident can cause a runaway reaction. This is a self-sustaining, often violent event that catches even the most vigilant operators by surprise. Whatever precautions are taken, the human factor remains.
 
Efficient and effective design
In their race to keep up with shifting markets and more discerning customers, manufacturers are moving away from mass production towards small batches of customised products delivered "just in time". We have heard a lot about flexible manufacturing, but what about the design than precedes it?
 
Time for publishers to turn the page
Ask your grandmother where to find information and she will almost certainly say `a reference book'. Ask a schoolchild and you're likely to get a variety of replies - CD-ROMs, the Internet, TV programmes, and yes, books. As Europe prepares to be an information society, publishing is facing its biggest challenge. In short, the choice is simple - stay with paper and join the dinosaurs, or grasp electronic media with both hands and hit the new century running.
