Consuming to save the planet
Every euro we spend changes the world. Many of us try to shop sustainably, and a few of us succeed. But most of us are still too used to consuming too much. What we need to do first is cut waste and travel less.
 
The world's special places
UNESCO's programme to establish a world network of biosphere reserves is now 30 years old. A commemorative book celebrates the growth of the network and looks at life and work in some of the most inspiring places on Earth.
 
Jam fumes
Good transport underpins economic growth but traffic fumes contribute to air pollution and global warming. Strategies to cut pollution without smothering growth must take note of a complicated web of cause and effect. The most promising tack is to change behaviour, not technology.
