Size still matters
Publishing - the sharing of ideas - is a vital part of any knowledge-based economy. New technologies have sparked a profound change in the industry, which provides opportunities for new entrants. But existing known brands stand to gain most.

 

Driving into the future
Despite attempts to cajole European citizens out of their cars and on to public transport, many people's first thought is still to drive themselves. A study by the EU's Joint Research Centre shows that we will wait in vain, if we expect technology to solve the resultant problems of congestion and pollution.

 

Braking transport growth
Measures that restrain transport demand, rather than treat the symptoms of rising traffic volumes, have been criticised as restrictive and unfair. But the European Conference of Ministers for Transport says action must be taken if environmental damage is to be reduced and the quality of life improved.

 

Sky blues
If air travel continues to grow at its present rate, Britain will need to build five extra airports the size of Heathrow within 30 years. To prevent this environmental disaster, the tax exemptions enjoyed by the sector must be scrapped, a think-tank report argues.
