A conference on 'Achaemenid traces in ancient cultural monuments of Eurasian nomads' will take place from 21 to 22 January 2011 in Berlin, Germany.

The event will focus on the influence during antiquity of the Achaemenid culture on the early nomads of Eurasia. Founded in 550 BC, the Achaemenid Empire was the largest empire by geographical extent in ancient times; at the height of its power, the empire encompassed approximately 8 million square kilometers. The empire was forged by Cyrus the Great, and spanned three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. It had a centralised, bureaucratic administration under the Emperor and a large professional army and civil service, inspiring similar developments in later empires.

The event will look at the results of the 'Influences of Achaemenid culture in the art of the early Sarmatian time in the southern Urals, 5th to 4th cent. BC' project. Through this project, closer cooperation has developed in studying the processes of cultural exchange between the regions and political entities of ancient Central Asia and the adjacent Eurasian/Central Asian region at that time. For further information, please visit: http://www.fu-berlin.de/en/presse/fup/2010/fup_10_357/index.html(opens in new window)
