Argumentation as a foundation for the semantic grid

Objective

ARGUGRID aims at providing a new model for programming the Grid at a semantic, knowledge-based level of abstraction through the use of argumentative agent technology. Within this model, this technology is used to provide the reasoning and decision making processes required to facilitate the dynamic composition of Grid resources and services into executable workflows.

Within ARGUGRID, agents are associated with service requestors and service providers. The agents encompass the logic for internal decision making and are equipped with methods for negotiation with other agents. With the support of argumentation processes, the agents decide which services can be used for fulfilling the demands of users and also how to create, manage and join virtual organisations, understood as societies of agents, to compose individual services into more complex ones.

ARGUGRID makes two novel contributions to grid computing. The first relates to the definition of the overall architecture for interfacing service-oriented workflows with agent technology. This is achieved through the definition of semantic descriptions of workflows and the development of tools that map the results of the agent negotiation and planning phase into executable workflows that make use of web service and grid service protocols. The second is developing a grid-based platform enabling the formation of virtual organization for the communication and interaction of agents. This is achieved through the use of Peer-to-Peer and Overlay Network techniques and through the use of standardized communication protocols.

The project focuses on e-business application scenarios, but its results are outreaching to all kinds of applications. ARGUGRID aims at making an impact upon the Grid research area via the new model, architecture and platform. It also aims at impacting business and business practices, by empowering Grid-enabled business application where multiple service providers and requesters exist.
