Application of remote sensing to changes in forest lands
The European Commission, DG VI, has launched an open call to tender for a study on the application of remote sensing to changes in forest lands. With regard to the Commission activities in favour of rural development, DG VI is implementing measures aimed at improving the forest-land sector within the EU. With a need for up-to-date and standard information on forest resources, the Commission is examining the manner in which recent developments in matters of remote-sensing techniques may be used to this end. The study aims to determine the possibility of utilizing remote-sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) in order to obtain detailed information on the forest-land sector. In this study the contractor will analyse and verify the utility of these techniques in the following two areas: - Monitoring of forest-land changes: development and description of a system allowing for the detection and identification of changes occurring in relation to afforestation; - Monitoring of the diversity: development of a system for the detection and description of the structural diversity of forest lands. The study is expected to last for 18 months after the signature of the contract.
