The Geoweb Europe project, funded by the European Community's INFO2000 programme, aims to develop a multilingual multimedia information service relating to geographical information. The project aims to respond to growing demand in Europe for geographical information (GI) in languages other than English. The objectives of the project are: - To set up a pan-European GI information service, to increase understanding and awareness of potential customers, to foster and develop the market, and to help European added-value companies in this sector become better informed and more competitive; - To secure the economic viability of the service through partnerships and through a market study. The project is currently undergoing its definition phase, and will enter its implementation phase after June 1997. The information service will consist of three elements: - A quarterly multilingual printed information bulletin; - An interactive multilingual WWW server; - An annually updated CD-ROM. The information service will be provided free of charge during the definition phase, and will continue to be freely available for low level access during the implementation phase. Subscriptions for high level access and advertising will provide revenue during the implementation phase.
