Convention for the protection of the marine environment of the North-east Atlantic
A Council Decision on the conclusion of the "Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-east Atlantic" has recently been published in the Official Journal of the European Communities. This Decision approves the ratification of the Convention on behalf of the Community. The Decision authorizes the European Commission to represent the Community within the commission established to supervise the implementation of the Convention. In addition, this commission will undertake the following tasks: - Review the condition of the maritime area, and the effectiveness of measures adopted; - Identify priorities and the need for additional measures; - Draw up programmes and measures, including economic instruments, for the prevention and elimination of pollution, and for the control of activities which may adversely affect the maritime area - Establish, where necessary, subsidiary bodies; - Establish work programmes at regular intervals; - Adopt the necessary proposals for the amendment of the Convention.
