A new Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) programme "Cluster for Intelligent Mobile Agents for Telecommunication Environments" (CLIMATE) has been established following the first software agents technology workshop in February 1998. The application of mobile agent technology in the fields of telecommunications and electronic commerce is one of the main areas of research under the ACTS programme. The key objective of this cluster is to stimulate information exchange and to optimize cooperation between ACTS agent projects. This is in order to strengthen the European position in agent technology and should enable the harmonization of work and help to avoid duplication. The prime focus of the cluster work will be ACTS projects from the "Intelligence in services and networks" domain (Domain 5), such as the Mobile Agent Environment for Intelligent Networks (MARINE) project, and the Open Communication Environment for Agent-based Networked Services (OCEANS) project. However agent-related projects within other ACTS domains will also form part of the cluster, for example the Domain 1 project, Multi-Agent Based Video Content Analysis (MODEST). Strong collaboration with agent projects under the ESPRIT programme (for example, Architecture-Neutral Intelligent Mobile Agents (ANIMA)) and the EURESCOM programme (for example, P815, on Communications Management Process Integration Using Software Agents) is also envisaged, the latter being associated members of the cluster. The cluster will promote ACTS and associated agent project activities and disseminate results to a wide audience. The cluster and its sub-clusters aim to meet every three months, in conjunction with the quarterly ACTS Concertation Meetings.
