AC-IMPEL, an informal network for the implementation of environmental legislation in the ten accession countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and Cyprus has recently been launched by the European Environment Commissioner, Ritt Bjerregaard. The network comprises government officials from the accession countries dealing with the implementation and enforcement of environmental legislation. It will work in close cooperation with the existing EU-IMPEL network which will provide support to the candidate countries during the pre-accession phase. In effect, AC-IMPEL, in cooperation with its EU counterpart will constitute a forum where problems relating to the implementation and enforcement of the environmental acquis in the accession countries can be addressed. The countries participating in the network are Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania.
