The European Commission, DG X, has published a call for proposals for new radio initiatives and for initiatives concerning European and multilingual television channels for cultural purposes. This is in order to give effect to subsidies available under the 1998 budget for such purposes. It should be noted that only the operational phase of projects providing European digital radio services and projects concerning European channels and/or groupings will be considered. Proposals should make it possible to assess the actual production capacities of the project, and should only concern activities following the actual establishment of the services. The proposals should have a genuine European dimension and should incorporate multilingual and multicultural aspects in their development. They should also take into account current technological developments in the transmission and dissemination of programmes. The Commission will contribute not more than 50% of the costs of the projects selected. The projects must be implemented within a period of twelve months and must be started in 1998.
