The KALEIDOSCOPE programme, which aims to encourage, by means of cooperation, artistic and cultural creation in Europe, will finish at the end of 1998. The final projects selected under the programme have recently been designated funding of approximately ECU 10 million, following the evaluation of an independent group of experts. The projects supported are required to have a European dimension, and therefore involve partnerships between organizations from at least three Member States, which promote the knowledge and transmission of culture. The programme is organized around two actions: - Action 1: Support for events and cultural projects carried out in partnership or through networks; - Action 2: Large-scale European cooperation projects. Of the 147 projects selected, 135 fall under Action 1, and will receive Community funding totalling ECU 6 million. In Action 2, the 12 projects selected will receive almost ECU 2 million in total. The projects selected represent 15.8% of the total number of projects submitted (930). In addition, financial support of ECU 600,000 was given to the EU Youth Orchestra, and support of ECU 300,000 was given to the EU Baroque Orchestra. Support was also granted to the European City of Culture for 1998 (Stockholm) and for the European Cultural Months to be held in Linz, Austria, and Valletta, Malta.
