The European Commission, DG XVI, has published an invitation to tender for the coordination of the overall content of a study programme on European spatial planning to be carried out by a network of research institutes. This study programme will be carried out within the context of the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP), the first official draft of which was adopted in June 1997 by the ministers responsible for spatial planning in the EU. The first ESDP is likely to be adopted in 1999. The objectives behind the ESDP cannot be fully achieved if the study programme does not provide the technical elements required for the analysis of the characteristics of European territory, and for the clarification of related themes. A coordinating body for the network of research institutes will therefore be selected for the overall content of the study programme, to provide results with a European dimension and to facilitate networking among the selected institutes. The tasks of this coordinating body are expected to commence on 1 September 1998 and will be fulfilled by the end of February 2000.
