The European Multimedia Schoolnet project, which is receiving support following the call for proposals launched by the European Commission's Educational Multimedia Task Force, will be officially launched in La Hulpe, Belgium, on 8 and 9 September 1998. Representatives of the European Commission, national Education Ministers, and other senior policy-makers will be present to endorse the initiative. The project has been initiated and designed to respond to the priorities and concerns reflected in the Commission's Action Plan "Learning in the Information Society", launched on 2 October 1996. The project forms one of the implementation strategies of this Action Plan, and aims to establish the European Schoolnet as a multimedia and communication platform to serve European schools. It will also provide a framework for collaboration at European level among national educational authorities, universities and industry to develop information and communications technologies in schools. The project combines the R&D activities of the Telematics Applications programme with the academic innovation and teacher training generated in the Community action programme, SOCRATES, in order to create an environment conducive to exploring the new teaching and learning opportunities offered by ICT. The project will also involve extensive demonstration carried out within the framework of TEN-TELECOM, which provides a series of guidelines for developing trans-European telecommunications networks.
