Austria took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July 1998, for the first time ever after just three and a half years of EU membership. Although research is just one area of many in which Austria will chair discussions in the Council during the second half of 1998, it will have responsibility for finalising the Fifth Framework Programme which will direct EU research activities over the next five years. As with previous Presidencies, CORDIS, in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Transport, has established a new Information Service to bring details of developments in EU research and innovation activities to a wide audience. The new Service will provide news of discussions in the EU's Research Council, as well as of research and related developments within Austria during the next six months. With information updated weekly, and available in both German and English, the Service will be of interest to scientists, academics and industrialists from across Europe. Among the features on the new Service will be details of activities of the Research Council and its subsidiary bodies, and an outline of the Austrian Presidency's priorities in the field. Apart from finalising the Fifth Framework Programme, Austria also aims to develop international cooperation in the research field, in particular with those countries which are now negotiating to join the EU. A major feature on the Service provides information on research and development activities in Austria, and Austrian participation in EU research activities is also explored. Every month Austrian projects which have benefited from EU support will be spotlighted, demonstrating innovative projects and processes. Information on key events relating to the Presidency will be available, whilst contacts for information on research in Austria and Web links are also provided. A press section will provide easy access to the latest news. The Austrian Presidency Service will also provide details of activities in two areas closely related to research: education and telecommunications.
