Netd@ys Europe forms part of the three-year action plan "Learning in the Information Society", which was launched in 1996 to stimulate the use of information technology in schools and other learning environments. Local and regional projects which make up Netd@ys Europe will be carried out from 17 to 25 October 1998. First reports on the 1998 initiative show that the number of applications has been quadrupled in comparison to previous years, and the number of projects funded has doubled. To date, 800 projects have been submitted and over 3,000 events announced. The objective of Netd@ys is to demonstrate, through awareness raising activities, the contribution of the Internet and new media to the development of knowledge, training and culture. Participants in the 1998 initiative will include schools, museums, youth and cultural centres and training institutions. The projects offer a wide variety of themes such as the environment, mathematics, astronomy and history.
