A new project on the provision of language resources over electronic networks (INTERLEX) has recently been approved under the EU's multiannual programme for the promotion of a Multilingual Information Society (MLIS). The aim of the project is to address problems faced by publishers in electronic dictionary publishing, which are related to high investment costs and uncertain commercial exploitation potential. The INTERLEX project will aim to convert electronic bilingual and multilingual dictionaries into databases with indexing and searching facilities. In order to do this, the standard format GENETER will be used for terminological resources and an extension will be developed to cover a suitable format for general purpose dictionaries. The first objective of the project is to use and adapt a common working format and to transfer the coding systems used by each publisher to a common one. Once the coding format has been developed, the dictionaries will be unified and improved. These will be integrated into an interface to make them available for use on the Internet and index and search engines will be created to work in client-server architecture. An interface for demonstration purposes and an exploitation plan will also be developed for commercial strategies.
