The CORDIS Ireland R&D Information Service, launched in September 1998 by Noel Treacy, Ireland's Minister for Science and Technology, will "play a very important role in assisting in the essential transfer of knowledge". Through the information it provides on R&D and innovation activities in Ireland and their links with the EU, the service aims to help researchers "to build successful partnerships, exploit European Research and ultimately improve the competitiveness of the European Community". Minister Treacy recalled the success of publication of the Irish Government's White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation on CORDIS during the Irish EU Presidency in 1996. Irish researchers will reap most benefit from the ever-developing opportunities offered by the Information Society through obtaining timely information through services such as the CORDIS Ireland Service, according to the Minister. However, he emphasised the need for researchers to contribute information on their activities if the service is to fulfil its potential. The first of a series of spotlights focuses on Trinity College Dublin, Ireland's oldest university. Trinity is involved in some 130 EU-funded research projects from across the technological spectrum, including membership of 20 thematic networks funded by the TMR programme - one of the highest levels in Europe. The university has its own research and innovation support service, launched in 1986. One of the key achievements of this service has been to support the launch of some 40 campus companies, on the basis of technologies and services developed at Trinity. Information on Trinity on the CORDIS Ireland Service provides quick access to details of these services, projects underway and the various campus companies and industry-sponsored research activities active in the university.
