The European Commission, DG XIII, has published an activity report for the Language Engineering sector of the Telematics Applications programme during the period 1994-1995. The Language Engineering sector launched three calls for proposals between December 1994 and September 1995. From these calls, 32 shared-cost projects and six accompanying measures were selected for funding. The Community contribution to these is some ECU 50 million, with a total investment of ECU 80 million. These projects bring together about 370 organizations. Projects under way cover a broad range of multilingual and transnational services for a variety of user groups: - Police and emergency services; - Employment agencies and enterprises; - Port authorities; - Users of directory services; - Banking and financial operators; - Telephone-based customer services operators; - Aeronautic and automotive industries; - Train travellers and railway operators; - Social security services; - Drivers and providers of traffic management systems. The projects cover topics as diverse as multimedia messaging, online job offers and demands, multilingual yellow pages, automated call centres and voice-operated in-vehicle navigation and information systems.
