The European Commission has published a full list of accredited environmental verifiers under the Community Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), as well as a list of sites registered under the scheme. The EMAS Regulation establishes a voluntary environmental management scheme, based on harmonized lines and principles throughout the European Union. It is open to industrial companies operating in the EU. The overall objective of the scheme is to promote continuous environmental performance improvements of industrial activities by committing sites to evaluate and improve their environmental performance and provide relevant information to the public. Sites who wish to be registered in the scheme must have their environmental policy, programme, management system, review or audit procedure and environmental statement or statements examined to verify that they meet the requirements of the Regulation and to have their environmental statements validated. This verification and validation must be carried out by an independent, appropriately accredited, environmental verifier. These latest lists, including sites and verifiers whose registration has been notified to the Commission up to and including 15 April 1997, lists details of 166 EMAS accredited environmental verifiers and over 700 EMAS registered sites.
