The European Science Foundation (ESF) is offering up to five awards for the organization, in 1998, of exploratory workshops aimed at identifying research projects which would benefit from being carried out on a European level. The aim of each workshop is to allow 15-20 leading European scientists to discuss the scientific background of, as well as the need for, an initiative in one of a number of specified areas. It is expected that these workshops will lead to the formulation of research proposals for scientific programmes of the highest quality which, after evaluation by the ESF Standing Committee for Life and Environmental Sciences (LESC), may be recommended for launching. The areas to be covered by the workshops are as follows: - Structural biology; - Integrative biology; - Water circulation and exchange processes in the deep sea floor environment. High quality and innovative proposals for exploratory workshops in life and environmental sciences outside the above areas are also encouraged. There are no special application forms required. Four copies of the application, in English, should be submitted containing the following information: - Summary of proposed research topic (maximum 1,000 words) and intended outcome of workshop; - Clear justification of the need for European collaboration; - Name and curriculum vitae of scientific coordinator; - List of proposed participants (with a European dimension); - Workshop programme (to include time for discussion); - Estimate of costs (maximum of FF 100,000, incl. travel, accommodation, meals, etc); - Proposed date and location of workshop. Applications should be sent to: European Science Foundation Dr. A. Moth Wiklund LESC 1 quai Lezay-Marnésia F-67080 Strasbourg Cedex Tel. +33-3-88767129; Fax +33-3-88370532 E-mail: LESC@esf.org
