The European Environment Agency is currently preparing its next three yearly report on the State of the Environment in Europe, to be published in December 1998. The current tender is for a consultant to write a chapter entitled "Integration of environment and economy". The consultant will have to develop, in cooperation with the Agency, the draft chapter. This includes collecting data (e.g. from statistics and studies) that is most appropriate to measure the progress of integration of environment and economy. This data has then to be analysed and presented in the form of a well-illustrated text-based chapter; the assessment is facts-oriented and does not aim at analysing policy options. If some data needed for the analysis is not available, the respective requirements for data collection should clearly be described. Market-based instruments and at least the five target sectors (as set out in the EU 5th Environmental Action Programme) would be at the core of the analysis. The work will involve data collection, analysis, writing and visualization (in the form of charts, tables, figures, etc.), tasks based on the information and material collected by the consultant. In addition data that has already been collected by the EEA during the course of writing previous or current reports will be provided. The work is to be executed over a period of 10 months starting in January 1998. The work will involve frequent contacts and close collaboration with EEA staff in Copenhagen in charge of coordinating the production of the report. Contacts with the other writers and experts of the EEA European topic centres will be organized as necessary.
