The European Commission, DG XI, has published a call for proposals to be financed, in 1998, under the LIFE financial instrument for the environment. Actions eligible for funding under LIFE fall into three main categories: - LIFE Environment: . Innovative and demonstration actions for industry; . Demonstration, promotion and technical assistance actions for local authorities; . Preparatory actions to support Community legislation and policies; - LIFE Nature: . Action aiming at the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora of EU interest; - LIFE Third Countries: . Technical assistance in the establishment of environment administrative structures; . Nature conservation actions; . Demonstration actions to promote sustainable development. Eligible countries for LIFE Third Countries funding in 1998 are: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, West Bank and Gaza, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and the Baltic shoreline of Russia. The application procedure and deadline for submission of proposals differs according to the sector. Proposals must be written on specific application forms, which are contained in the detailed Information Packages available for each sector. For LIFE Environment, Information Packages may be obtained from the national authorities, Euro Info Centres or the Commission (Fax +32-2-2969561). Each Member State has set its own deadline, in November or December 1997, for submitting applications to the national authorities. For LIFE Nature, Information Packages may be obtained from the national authorities or from the Commission (Fax +32-2-2969556). Each Member State has set its own deadline for submitting applications to national authorities (see Info Pack). For LIFE Third Countries, Information Packages may be obtained from the European Commission's Delegations in the Third Countries listed above or from the Commission (Fax +32-2-2994123).
