The European Geophysical Society (EGS) is an independent scientific organization for the promotion of the earth, planetary and space sciences on a disciplinary and interdisciplinary, pan-European and international level. The sciences encompassed by the EGS cover an extremely broad spectrum with research topics ranging from the study of the earth's core to planetary evolution, involving applications in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, engineering, electronics and computer sciences. In view of the European Community's forthcoming Fifth Framework Programme, the EGS is intending to further extend its services. The Society will, in particular, support the following: - The exchange of scientists on a pan-European level, in order to promote excellence in the earth, planetary and space sciences; - The placement of scientists, in particular at pre- and post-doctoral level, searching for research and job opportunities; - The optimal use of research infrastructures in order to reduce costs and efforts and to increase excellence; - The creation of links to SMEs in the environmental and earth system sciences, in order to foster reciprocal understanding between the academic and business worlds and promote cooperation for mutual benefit.
