The European Commission, DG XII, has published an overview of the results of tropospheric chemistry projects supported within the Third Framework Programme. The report is one of a series of Air Pollution Research Reports published by the Commission, and details the results of some 31 projects supported under the Environment research programme between 1992 and 1996. The projects dealt with fields such as physics, meteorology, chemistry and transport, photochemical processes, boundary layer processes and multiphase processes. The general objective of this part of the programme was to improve scientific knowledge of regional and global air pollution issues, mainly related to the quantification of the emissions from different sources, their transport, transformation and removal processes in the atmosphere. The projects involved a mixture of field experiments, laboratory investigations and modelling studies, complemented by developments of ad hoc instrumentation for accurate measurements of the main trace compounds of interest and a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in these processes. It was intended that the results would provide improved scientific guidance to EU environmental policies, as well as promoting input for further research. The overview looks at the main achievements of the projects and lists major publications resulting from the work.
