A new publication from the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Industrial and Materials Technologies (BRITE-EURAM) provides a comprehensive overview of the goals and achievements of the programme, setting it within the overall context of European research policy. The booklet, "BRITE-EURAM - A decade of developing competitiveness", looks at the history of the European Framework Programmes for research and technological development and their impact on European competitiveness and industrial development. The evolution of the BRITE-EURAM programme since the launch of the BRITE and EURAM programmes in 1985 and 1986 respectively is outlined, highlighting the role of the programmes in promoting greater European cooperation and networking in this key sector and encouraging greater involvement of SMEs in the R&D process. In addition to interviews with a number of high-level personalities - Commissioner Cresson, Viscount Davignon and Professor Scapagnini, among others - the publication offers some key examples of areas in which BRITE-EURAM projects are making a difference. Perspectives for the development of Community RTD policy within the context of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme are also examined.
