The Community's INNOVATION programme has published a formal version of the report entitled "Innovation management tools: A review of selected methodologies". The report is based on a study conducted under the European Innovation Monitoring System (EIMS) and is aimed at assisting innovation services and intermediary organizations. The study was concerned with tools and methodologies used by consultants and advisors working with SMEs to help them manage innovation. The report should raise awareness among European innovation service organizations, consultants and SMEs of innovation management tools. Furthermore, it should promote the utilization of these tools and contribute to the exchange of know-how and cooperation between European organizations for the development of high performance business and technology diagnostic tools and methodologies. The report contains summaries and detailed appraisals of 17 innovation management tools, along with briefer information on others. A number of supporting case studies are included to better illustrate the effective use of selected tools. A classification system for innovation management tools has been developed, and this is used in the overall assessments of the tools covered. Finally, the study developed a process-based model to aid understanding of innovation in firms. This is illustrated with further case studies.
