The European Commission has approved funding of ECU 2.3 million for 184 projects in the field of books and reading to be supported under the ARIANE programme. The ARIANE programme (1997-1998) is organized around the following three actions: - Assistance for translation: aimed at encouraging wider knowledge and circulation of high quality twentieth century European literary works, theatrical works; reference books and studies of information in the cultural sector; - Cooperation projects: projects implemented on a partnership basis and designed to improve public access to books and reading; - Training projects: improvement of the skills of professionals working towards the knowledge and dissemination of European literature. Projects will be supported in all three action areas. In addition, support will be given to the Aristeion Prizes: the European Literary Prize and the European Translation Prize. The presentation of these prizes will take place at the end of the year, in close cooperation with the authorities of Thessaloniki - the 1997 European City of Culture.
