ESF call for programme proposals in the physical and engineering sciences
The European Science Foundation (ESF) has published a call for outline proposals for scientific programmes in the physical and engineering sciences. In line with the draft ESF Plan 1998-2001, which should be approved next Spring, the ESF Standing Committee for the Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) has launched a call for "outline proposals" for ESF scientific programmes. Preference will be given to the following scientific areas: - 1. Chemical and physical systems at extreme scales and conditions ("breaking the nano-metre and femtosecond barriers"): collaborative approaches on R&D topics of atoms, molecules, or matter at extreme scales and conditions; - 2. Novel materials systems and complex molecules: collaborative R&D approaches on novel materials or on new molecules and supramolecules; - 3. Non-linear dynamic systems: collaborative R&D efforts on open non-linear systems far from equilibrium; - 4. Advanced computing methods and systems: collaborative approaches on modelling and algorithms, artificial intelligence, man-machine interface, advanced computing systems; - 5. Complex technologies and complex technical systems: collaborative approaches in fundamental research related to "intelligent technologies" and "integrated solutions" for fundamental technical challenges, including future energy systems. Outstanding proposals from other areas will, however, also be considered. Applicants are asked to note that only a few submissions will finally lead to the launching of an ESF scientific programme. Applicants must comply with the "Application Procedure" and adhere to the "General Features of ESF Scientific Programmes" available on the ESF Web site.
